Citation:
Theroux, M. Building a Successful Technology Cluster. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, EPA/600/R-13/035, 2013.
Impact/Purpose:
This report is intended as a review of existing literature on cluster formation for potential cluster organizers and stakeholders of existing clusters. The report supports the Environmental Technology Clusters Program’s mission of fostering the development of technology innovation clusters by providing stakeholders with information on best practices for cluster formation. Since the report is intended as a resource and does not address environmental policy-related concerns or contain high-profile scientific information, its impact is not expected to be controversial.
Description:
Silicon Valley is the iconic cluster—a dense regional network of companies, universities, research institutions, and other stakeholders involved in a single industry. Many regions have sought to replicate the success of Silicon Valley, which has produced technological innovations with global impact and considerable economic growth in and around the Santa Clara Valley. This paper examines literature by Porter, Smilor, Gibson, Kozmetsky, Phillips, and others to synthesize the prerequisites and practices that can create a successful technology innovation cluster.
