treatment of pharmaceuticals in water

Description:

Recently, many researchers have made a lot of effort to utilize the visible light portion of the solar spectrum to activate TiO2 photocatalyst for environmental applications, such as water, air, and soil remediation. The deposition of noble metals on photocatalysts is of great interest to extend the photoresponse of TiO2 into the visible spectral range (~45 % of solar light) because deposited noble metals can enhance the electron-hole separation and shift the light absorption toward visible light range. In addition, deposited noble metals can modify the surface adsorption properties of catalysts. In this study, UV-vis light activated, Ag-decorated monodisperse TiO2 (TiO2-Ag) particles were synthesized by an innovative sol-gel method. The structure of monodisperse TiO2 was controlled by ionic strength and Ag was provided by chemical reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) in methanol. For the characterization of TiO2-Ag, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, scanning electron microscopy, and porosimetry analysis were employed. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2-Ag for the degradation of a pharmaceutical, oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), was evaluated under UV-vis irradiation. The concentration of OTC was analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography. The results of the synthesis and characterization of Ag-decorated monodisperse TiO2 particles and the evaluation of photocatalytic activity of TiO2-Ag particles will be presented.
