My Role as an EPA Scientist
Citation:
Olszyk, D. My Role as an EPA Scientist. Presented at Seminar on Professional Development, OSU, College of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences, February 08, 2013.
Impact/Purpose:
This talk is part of a seminar series which informs students concerning different career paths in science. I will discuss my career with the EPA and what I do on a day-to-day basis. I will also discuss the EPA hiring process in general and career advancement. This talk will hopefully encourage students to consider a career with the EPA, and, thus help insure that EPA hs high qualified scientists to achieve its mission in the future.
Description:
I will first describe my role as a Research Ecologist with the EPA’s Office of Research and Development, National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory, Western Ecology Division, in Corvallis, Oregon, an example of a government agency conducting research in Environmental Sciences. I will briefly touch on my Job Description, and then focus on how the EPA conducts research on a day-to-day basis. I will describe how positions in the EPA are announced and evaluated in general, and how a scientist undergoes advancement (Technical Qualifications Board) within the agency. I will then reflect on how my career path developed and formative experiences which may have been most important in leading me to my current position. I will answer any questions the students have about my career and general EPA hiring processes from my viewpoint.
