Impact/Purpose:

PPT presentation on cost of arsenic removal system.

Description:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted 50 full-scale demonstration projects on treatment systems removing arsenic from drinking water in 26 states throughout the U.S. The projects were conducted to evaluate the performance, reliability, and cost of arsenic removal technologies and to determine their effects on water quality in distribution systems. One major objective was to collect cost and performance data that might be used by small water systems, engineering firms, and state agencies to make informed decisions on selecting appropriate arsenic treatment technologies to achieve the revised arsenic maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 g/L. Of the 50 treatment systems selected for demonstration, 28 were adsorptive media (AM) systems with design flow rates ranging from 10 gpm to 640 gpm systems. Nine different AM products were used by the 28 systems. System designs consisted of series and parallel configurations. Other variables consisted of tank materials, pH adjustment, and backwash recycle. The paper will summarize the capital and operating cost of the cost data collected from the 28 AM demonstration systems. Total capital investment cost are broken down in to three major categories; equipment, engineering and installation and reported on a gpm and gpd basis. The total O/M cost categories consisted of media replacement, chemical usage, electricity and labor. O/M costs are reported on 1,000 gal of treated water. As expected, these O/M cost were dependent on media cost and arsenic removal capacity and varied from $0.30 to as high as $22.05 per 1000 gal of treated water.
