Description:
The castration of a dog or cat can be an emotion laden issue. In many cases it is the best solution for resolving behavior related problems as well as an important method for decreasing pet overpopulation. Sometimes the idea is met with resistance, particularly by some male owners, despite all the medical and social evidence and arguments that support performing the operation. The subject of castration should be dealt with as a rational medical and societal benefit discussion. Castration can help prevent the development of some behavioral problems in addition to the prevention of certain hormone related diseases and unwanted litters, and is a sound reason for a general neutering policy as adopted by many animal welfare organizations. The discussion will bring in issues of societal norms and how we as veterinarians can help to change minds. Examples from situations of how acceptable societal norms in one circumstance can have disastrous consequences when applied to situations which require completely different behavior will be presented. Discussion will be encouraged to identify opportunities for changed attitudes in Columbia.
