Evaluation of the BioVapor Model

Citation:

Weaver, James. Evaluation of the BioVapor Model. Presented at 23rd National Tanks Conference and Expo, March 19 - 21, 2012.

Impact/Purpose:

Poster for the 23rd National Tanks Conference and Expo in St. Louis, MO on March 19-21, 2012.

Description:

The BioVapor model addresses transport and biodegradation of petroleum vapors in the subsurface. This presentation describes basic background on the nature and scientific basis of environmental transport models. It then describes a series of parameter uncertainty runs of the BioVapor model demonstrating the dependence of the model results on a number of model parameters. From these results, it can be seen that the model is highly sensitive to the strenght and depth of the source, along with parameters controlling biodegradation. The latter include the oxygen supply to the subsurface, moisture content and biodegradation rates. Building parameters are only likely to be important when the source is strong and located just below the foundation.
