Biomarkers: Dynamic "Tools" for Health and Safety Risk Assessment

Citation:

DREHER, K. L. Biomarkers: Dynamic "Tools" for Health and Safety Risk Assessment. Presented at 2012 International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Annual Meeting, Phoenix, AZ, January 20 - 25, 2012.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation will place biomarkers in the context of different risk assessment and management paradigms in order to: i) better define their utility for these specific decisions; ii) identify the strengths and weaknesses of their application; and iii) identify challenges in their development. In addition, the use of biomarkers in the context of the National Academy's -Toxicity Testing in the 21st century will be discussed.

Description:

Today informational flow from biomarkers contributes importantly to various types of health effects research, risk assessment and risk management decisions that impact, or have the potential to impact, public health and safety. Therefore, dependent upon the nature of the health risk and management paradigm(s) or strategic research needs application different types of biomarkers are required to assist in making either research and/or regulatory decisions which impact public health and safety.
