Estimating Climate Change Impacts on Vegetation-based Ecosystem Services in the U.S.

Citation:

Impact/Purpose:

To quantify and value climate change impacts on the provisioning of specific ecosystems services in the co-terminous U.S.

Description:

The dynamic global vegetation model MC1 is being used to assess the potential impacts of climate change on vegetation and ecosystem services (e.g., biological sequestration, provisioning of grazing land, avoided forest fire suppression costs) in the U.S. MC1 projects the “potential” distribution of vegetation (absent human intervention), including information about the sizes of different carbon stocks over time under different climate change scenarios. Climate change can affect the size of these stocks through temperature- or precipitation-related changes in plant productivity, vegetation type, and carbon releases from wildfires.
