Ozone NAAQS Review: Risk/Exposure Assessment

Citation:

Ozone NAAQS Review: Risk/Exposure Assessment.

Impact/Purpose:

The Risk/Exposure Assessment will include, as appropriate, quantitative and qualitative estimates of human health and welfare risks/exposures associated with current ambient levels of Ozone, concentrations that just meet the current standard(s), and possible alternative standards. A concise risk/exposure assessment report will be prepared that focuses on key results, observations, and uncertainties. Following the review of the first draft of this document (Ozone NAAQS Risk / Exposure Assessment - 1st Draft), as needed, a second draft will be produced and also provided to CASAC for review as well as made available to the public for review and comment. A final draft document will be produced after considering CASAC and public comments. All documents will be made publicly available.

Description:

Ozone is one of the six major air pollutants for which EPA has issued air quality criteria and established national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) based on those criteria. The Clear Air Act (CAA) requires EPA to periodically review and revise, as appropriate, existing air quality criteria and NAAQS. The CAA also requires an independent scientific committee to review the criteria and to advise the Administrator regarding any recommended revisions to the existing criteria and standards, as may be appropriate. The Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) of EPA’s Science Advisory Board serves as this independent scientific committee. A tiered risk/exposure assessment will be conducted as part of the Ozone NAAQS review. This will include quantitative and qualitative analyses, as appropriate.
