Assessing Risks of Endocrine-disrupting Chemicals: A Scientific Odyssey

Citation:

ANKLEY, G. T. Assessing Risks of Endocrine-disrupting Chemicals: A Scientific Odyssey. Presented at Minnesota Water Resources Conference, St Paul, MN, October 18 - 19, 2011.

Impact/Purpose:

In the mid-90s there was a marked increase in public awareness of, and concern for, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). There have been a number of purported impacts of EDCs on both human and wildlife health; however, in some instances it has been challenging to relate observed effects to causes. In response to concerns about EDCs, organizations such as the USEPA have been developing screening and testing programs to identify potential endocrine-active chemicals. Emerging concepts and technologies in the area of predictive toxicology promise to enhance the efficiency and utility of these programs. This presentation will address events that have contributed to the emergence of EDCs as an issue, and address how new developments in predictive toxicology can assist in assessing the risk of these chemicals.
