NATIONAL SURVEY OF MERCURY CONCENTRATIONS IN FISH

Description:

Resource Purpose:Regulatory and scientific focus on mercury in the aquatic ecosystem has been largely motivated by the health risks of consuming contaminated fish, primarily because human exposure to methylmercury is almost wholly due to fish. Understanding of the methylmercury problem is still relatively limited. The ability to determine the nature and extent of mercury concentration in fish on a regional and national basis, to identify possible sources of contamination, and to link mercury concentrations to sources, depends on the availability of data suitable for such analysis. This database, containing information collected by the states, can be used to derive estimates of tissue concentration and calculate descriptive statistics on mercury concentrations in fish tissue.
