ARSENIC COMPLIANCE DATABASE FOR DRINKING WATER

Description:

Resource Purpose:Section 1412(b)(12)(A) of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) (42 U.S.C. ? 300f-300j), as amended in 1996, required EPA to propose a National Primary Drinking Water Regulation for arsenic by January 1, 2000, and to issue a final regulation by January 1, 2001. One of the elements used to estimate costs and benefits of the proposed new regulation is information about arsenic occurrence in drinking water, specifically estimates of the number of people and water systems that are affected by different levels of arsenic in drinking water. EPA has used the Arsenic Compliance Database (ACD) to estimate these occurrence numbers.
Legislation/Enabling Authority:The ACD consists of compliance monitoring data from 25 States, collected under SDWA. Arsenic is currently regulated at 50ppb. The data were submitted voluntarily to EPA through various sources: the American Water Works Association, State drinking water agencies, and other EPA program offices.
Supported Program:EPA/OW/OGWDW/SRMD/TAB, drinking water development program. The data were originally collected for compliance monitoring purposes. Only data about MCL and monitoring violations are provided to SDWIS.
