Citation:

HANSEN, V. E. Toward Sustainable Communities: Problems And Prerequisites Of Developing Sustainably. Presented at Introduction to a Workshop for Application of the PLACES Program in Biedenkopf, Germany, Biedenkopf, GERMANY, September 27, 2011.

Impact/Purpose:

To explain to the community why the PLACES program was developed and how it can meet local and institutional objectives.

Description:

This presentation is intended to explain to the community why the PLACES program was developed and how it can meet local and institutional objectives. Our hope is that this application will help develop the PLACES program and foster learning between Germany and the US. The application of US EPA's PLACES program to the town of Biedenkopf, Germany provides an innovative solution to land management as required by the German government and a way to achieve sustainable development. Although the government requires local planning to be consistent with and enhance the broader aims of national spatial planning, how this is to be accomplised is left to local agencies. Biedenkopf's participation in applying the PLACES program helps to answer the question while providing a test for the program to improve its development.
