A Systems Approach to Develop Sustainable Water Supply Infrastructure and Management

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

In a visit to Zhejiang University, China, Dr. Y. Jeffrey Yang will discuss in this presentation the system approach for urban water infrastructure sustainability. Through a system analysis, it becomes clear at an urban scale that the energy and water efficiencies of a water supply infrastructure are intertwined and both can be simultaneously improved through adaptive planning and the existing system optimization. This is considered important in time of climate change and dynamic developments in land use and socioeconomic factors. This presentation will illustrate ongoing EPA research on three aspects of water supply sustainability, for which cooperative research is discussed: system planning in carbon and water footprints; system optimization for both water quality and energy efficiency; and water efficiency in distribution.
