Citation:

Springer - Encylcopedia of Immigrant Health (EIH). Springer - Encylcopedia of Immigrant Health (EIH). . Springer India, Delhi, India, (2012).

Impact/Purpose:

To provide a general overview of examples of studies of the workplace or the home, and information examining the relationship between adverse health effects and pesticide exposures with a focus on immigrant populations.

Description:

The following description is based on the section of the EIH that is devoted to pesticides: Exposure to chemical pesticides occurs via 3 major pathways of exposure, i.e., inhalation, ingestion (dietary and non dietary) and dermal. Health response varies among individuals and is largely dependent on the health condition, age and characteristics of exposed individuals, typically with more deleterious effects in individuals with compromised health, small children, and the elderly. These sensitive populations are especially vulnerable when frequency and duration of exposures to pesticides are extensive.
