Description:

Preyssler type heteropolyacid viz., H14[NaP5W30O110] incorporated chitosan nanocomposite membranes (NCMs) were prepared by solution casting, characterized using a variety of techniques and employed in the pervaporation separation of water-ethanol mixtures as a function of feed water composition and temperature. The filler nanoparticles H14[NaP5W30O110] acted as the cross-linking agent to offer better thermal stability and mechanical strength over that of the nascent chitosan membrane. A remarkable increase in separation factor of 35,991 from 96 observed for nascent chitosan membrane demonstrates the effect added filler, mainly attributed to favorable interactions of filler nanoparticles with the membrane polymer. However, by increasing feed water composition and temperature, pervaporation performance decreased considerably. Diffusion and permeation of water and ethanol through the membranes were analyzed using Fick’s equation as well as Arrhenius relationship, whereas pervaporation performance was analyzed on the basis of sorption-diffusion model and Flory-Huggins theory.
