Description:
There is limited information regarding the in-situ performance of rehabilitation methods used for prolonging the service life of buried municipal pipeline systems. With some CIPP liners nearly 30 years in service, municipalities are expressing a strong interest in the collection of data regarding the condition of these CIPP liners to validate assumptions made regarding the anticipated design life, which were originally established based on accelerated testing. The outcome of such an evaluation will support decision making and cost/benefit evaluations, as well as provide shared experiences among the municipalities in a systematic and transferable manner. This paper reports results from a comprehensive series of tests performed on one CIPP liner specimens exhumed after being in service for more than 26 years, thus representing one of the first CIPP installations in North America. Out of this liner, samples were prepared for ASTM D638, ASTM D790, hardness, buckling, and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, standard soil and pH tests were also performed on the surrounding bedding materials. Results were compared with the design values available during the time of installation and with the controlled specimens prepared in the lab. Test results provided insight into degradation mechanisms and deterioration rates of in-situ, in-service CIPP liners.
