Description:

The concept of resilience is now frequently invoked by natural resource agencies in the United States. This reflects growing trends within ecology, conservation biology, and other disciplines acknowledging that social-ecological systems require management approaches recognizing their complexity. This paper examines the concept of resilience and the ways in which current legal and regulatory frameworks governing federal land management agencies have difficulty accommodating it. We then characterize how agencies are currently conceptualizing resilience in federal natural resource management efforts in the United States.
