Description:
The presentation discusses the effect of rain garden size on the hydrologic and pollutant removal performance of rain garden systems. The slides will summarize data from both the full-scale rain garden project associated with the permeable pavement parking lot as well as the pilot-scale, experimental testing at NRMRL’s Urban Watershed Research Facility using rain garden mesocosms. Buried instruments are proving useful in describing hydrologic performance of the full-scale rain gardens. While size does appear to have some effect on performance, it is not as important a driver of drainage and solids removal compared to other rain garden design features, including the presence of an internal saturation zone and the use of wood chips as a media carbon amendment.
