STANDER, E., M. BORST, T. OCONNOR, AND A. ROWE. Measure Twice, Build Once: Bench-Scale Testing to Evaluate Bioretention Media Design - slides. Presented at EWRI International Low Impact Develpment Conference, San Francisco, CA, April 12 - 14, 2010.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

The oral presentation will be at the EWRI International LID Conference in San Francisco, on April 11-14, 2010. The slides discuss the utility of conducting bench-scale testing on selected bioretention media and media amendments to validate hydrologic properties before installing media and amendments in larger pilot- or full-scale rain garden installations. The bench-scale study concluded that initial media and amendment selections did not provide adequate drainage. Consequently the pilot-scale rain gardens were constructed using a different media and carbon amendment. The design of the pilot-scale experiment will also be described, as well as preliminary results from the parking lot rain garden project. Both rain garden projects utilized the media selected based on the results of the bench-scale study.
