To inform the public.

Description:

The nitrifying biofilm grown in an annular biofilm reactor and the microbial deactivation achieved after monochloramine treatment were investigated using microelectrodes. The nitrifying biofilm ammonium microprofile was measured and the effect of monochloramine on nitrifying biofilm activity was investigated using microelectrodes. Monochloramine penetrated well into the biofilms with biofilm depth and contact time, and the ammonium microprofiles before and after monochloramine treatment showed the microbial deactivation from the disinfectant. The results of this research will provide more understanding of relationships between monochloramine penetration and microbial deactivation during the disinfection.
