Impact/Purpose:

Improve national aquatic resource assessments by conducting research on aquatic monitoring and assessment methods.

Description:

The Methods for Aquatic Resource Assessment (MARA) project consists of three main activities in support of assessing the conditions of the nation’s aquatic resources: 1) scientific support for EPA Office of Water’s national aquatic resource surveys; 2) spatial predications of river and stream conditions at unsampled locations; and 3) development of indicators of ecosystem services, or the sum total of benefits that an ecosystem provides to mankind. This research will product new ways to assess the condition of the nation’s aquatic resources in compliance with the Clean Water Act, and will inform EPA and other decision-makers in weighing the benefits provided by ecosystem services.
