Evaluating the risks of unregulated and emerging chemicals found in real world mixtures of drinking water under changing source water characteristics and alternative disinfection processes

Impact/Purpose:

Drinking Water MYP

Description:

This research will provide information to OW and the water community regarding the health effects of non-regulated DBPs mixtures present in drinking water. Research comparing disinfection process or source water characteristics compared to chlorination will determine if proposed differences in health effects associated with these factors is biologically plausible in animal model systems. It will evaluate the effects of newly identified or novel disinfection byproducts, compare the relative potency and toxicity of water disinfected by different processes (with a focus on alternative treatments, such as chloramination and ozonation), and characterize the health effects impact of treatment interactions with changes in source water characteristics. It will apply many of the tools and approaches in of chemical screening and prioritization and toxicity pathway-based risk assessment identified in EPA's computational toxicology program.
