Functionalized magnetic nanoparticles have emerged as viable alternatives to conventional materials, as robust, high-surface-area heterogeneous catalyst supports. Post-synthetic surface modification protocol for magnetic nanoparticles has been developed that imparts desirable chemical functionality and enables the generation of catalytic sites on the surfaces. Various catalysts were then prepared by non-covalent anchoring of an array of metals (Pd, Ru, Ni, and Rh) with well defined binding sites located on the surface of nano-ferrites. These nano-materials efficiently catalyze various reactions such as C-C coupling, oxidation, hydrogenation, transfer hydrogenation, and hydration reactions, in high yield and excellent selectivity. Magnetic separation, yet another sustainable attribute, eliminates the requirement of catalyst filtration after completion of the reaction. Preparative details of the novel catalyst supports and their application will be presented.
