Beneficial Use Of Contaminated Sediment

Impact/Purpose:

(1) Determine if various sediment contaminated with petroleum-like compounds offer some form of reuse or beneficial use; (2) Determine if particular sediment types can be economically used as a fuel supplement; and (3) Evaluate if combusted sediment results in air emission concerns when used in asphalt plants.

Description:

The western portion of the Lake George Branch of the Indian Harbor Canal (IHC) is no longer used for commercial purposes, but contains petroleum contaminated sediments. The IHC is considered an important habitat for many animal species. Several future development projects have been discussed for this water body, including restoration to a more natural setting. Restoration options for the IHC include in-situ capping, as well as dredging. If the material is dredged, then some form of sediment management (disposal or treatment) will be necessary.
