Ordination of the estuarine environment: What the organism experiences

Impact/Purpose:

Investigators customarily schedule estuary sampling trips with regard to a variety of criteria, especially tide stage and the day-night cycle.

Description:

Investigators customarily schedule estuary sampling trips with regard to a variety of criteria, especially tide stage and the day-night cycle. However, estuarine organisms experience a wide suite of continuously changing tide and light conditions. Such organisms may undertake important activities, such as foraging or movement, under specific conditions that may be missed or undersampled by the investigator. Presented here is an ordination approach for examining the range of environmental conditions experienced by an estuarine organism. This approach allows examination of the full range of variation in conditions that occur over an annual cycle, as well as an identification of common and exceptional conditions experienced by the organism.
