WILLIAMS, J. R., C. A. COOPER, S. LEHMAN, AND T. KERCHKOF. Introduction to the Watershed Central Web Site and Watershed Wiki Mini-Workshop. Presented at 17th National Nonpoint Source Monitoring Workshop, New Orleans, LA, September 14 - 17, 2009.

Impact/Purpose:

A means to help communities across the country to find the right approaches, tools and data to include in their watershed plans.

Description:

Many communities across the country struggle to find the right approaches, tools and data to include in their watershed plans. EPA recently posted a new web site called "Watershed Central,” a “one-stop" tool, to help watershed organizations and others find key resources to protect their local watershed. Watershed Central helps users find environmental data, watershed models, local organizations, and guidance documents -- and other information depending on the task at hand. It also contains links to watershed technical resources and funding, mapping applications to help find information specific to named watersheds, and includes a “Watershed Wiki” that watershed practitioners may use to collaborate. Watershed Central is located at: www.epa.gov/watershedcentral. This mini-workshop will introduce participants to theWatershed Central concept through an overview presentation, a presentation on the use and utility of the wiki site, and hands-on opportunities to become acquainted and explore watershed information already available through the site. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how they can add their own information to the wiki site for others to view and aid in building the knowledgebase for fellow watershed practitioners. In addition, users can provide feedback on tools, resources and other articles via the rating and comment features available on the wiki. Since the wiki site requires a login, new users will have the opportunity to register during the workshop. A limited number of computers will be available for participants, or participants can bring their own laptop computers to use during the workshop. Wireless internet access will be available for participants.
