Ecosystem Services Research Program: LTG 4: Ecosystem specific studies: wetlands

Impact/Purpose:

ECO myp

Description:

Includes review of ecosystem services derived from marine coastal, Great Lakes coastal, and isolated wetlands. Of particular interest is the development of guidelines to implement the 2008 EPA and ACE rules which require, for the first time, that specific ecosystem services be considered when determining wetland mitigation requirements. ESRP Wetlands research will produce, within 3-4 years, a scalable synthesis of the services that wetlands supply to society across a suite of wetland types, sizes, and regional landscapes. This will be accomplished by building on a large store of existing research, combined with additional regional data and data from the first national assessment of wetland condition. In the longer term (5+ years) interactions that are currently underway with the ESRP place-based, nitrogen, mapping, monitoring, modeling, and valuation themes will lead to integrated products including national and regional maps, models, and decision support tools. These products will feature estimates of the cumulative social and economic values of wetlands under alternative future scenarios.
