Well Screen Analysis Report Reveiw and Recommendations

Citation:

ACREE, S. D. AND R. T. WILKIN. Well Screen Analysis Report Reveiw and Recommendations. Presented at The Northern NM Citizen's Advisory Board for the USDOE, Santa Fe, NM, April 08, 2009.

Impact/Purpose:

The purpose is to review current revisions of documents describing the assessment of the impacts of well drilling practices at the Los Alamos National laboratory (LANL).

Description:

Personnel at the EPA Ground Water and Ecosystems Restoration Division (GWERD) of the National Risk Management Research Laboratory were requested by the EPA Region 6 to review current revisions of documents describing the assessment of the impacts of well drilling practices at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The use of bentonite and organic polymer drilling additives has resulted in changes to the aquifer materials surrounding well screens. The review concluded that there is a high degree of uncertainty in the results of the well screen analysis and supporting criteria reported by LANL due, mainly, to a lack of sufficient validation using laboratory and field data, uncertainty in the representativeness of the background data, and uncertainty regarding the site-specific evolution of mineralogy surrounding impacted well screens. Recommendations were made regarding laboratory and field studies to reduce this uncertainty and validate the criteria.
