Indoor Air Quality and Disease

Impact/Purpose:

This proceedings write-up provides overview of commonly encountered indoor air contaminants and related home conditions that may contribute to adverse cardiopulmonary health outcome in companion animals. This includes several outdoor air pollutants that permeate indoor spaces.

Description:

Concern over the quality of indoor (i.e., residential) as well as outdoor (i.e., environmental) air is increasing. Accordingly, owners of companion animals may approach their veterinarian about the potential for airborne irritants, allergens, pollutants, or infectious agents to negatively impact their pet’s health. Furthermore, if the pet has an underlying respiratory condition, an owner may inquire as to ways to improve the quality or purity of the air within the home. This session will review commonly encountered indoor air contaminants and related home conditions that contribute to adverse respiratory health outcome in small animals. Owing to the fact that many dogs, cats, and birds spend the majority of their lives within the home residence, the focus of the review will be on indoor air factors. This will include several outdoor air pollutants that readily permeate indoor spaces. Similar principles and precautions may apply to horses and camelids that winter in barns with dusty hay, minimal ventilation, and excessive dampness.
