Description:

An online high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the detection and quantification of trace levels of triclosan in water is discussed. Triclosan, an anti-bacterial agent, and related compounds have been shown to reach municipal waste waters through the disposal of various medical and personal-hygiene products. The analysis of aqueous solutions of these compounds at very low concentrations can be challenging. Current trace analysis methods involve solvent extraction, solid phase extraction (SPE), solid phase microextraction (SPME), or derivatization. However, some of these methods can be labor intensive, present reproducibility issues, and can be expensive. In this study, we developed methods to quantify, at part-per-trillion (ppt) levels, with the help of an online preconcentration column. This new method uses an HPLC-UV diode array detector and provides good specificity and reproducibility, with low limits of detection. In this presentation we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this method over existing methods, relation of pre-concentration volume and detection limits, selection of eluent, optimization of eluent ratios, flow rates, and retention times.
