EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) and EPA Office of Water (OW) joinined efforts to assess and evaluate programmatic, research & development (R&D) needs for sustainable water infrastructure development and effective adaptation to climate changes. The purpose of this project is to engage the participation of national experts and stakeholders in an open dialogue and to assist to EPA better implement its R&D activities and implementation of the National Water Program Strategy, in order to produce data and tools needed by the water utilities and practitioners. The EPA ORD/OW joint programmatic and R&D assessment and evaluation will be accomplished through a national adaptation workshop, including its planning and follow-up reporting. The activities are timely for the increased interest in this program area. Through the workshop, subsequent discussions and reporting, it is hoped that the objectives below will be achieved: To engage climate experts, researchers, and water and wastewater sector leaders in a dialogue to understand the urgent technical and management issues facing water and wastewater utilities in adapting to climate changes. To understand the data, information and tools needed by the water and wastewater industry for use in adaptive management and capital planning. To understand the limitations of current data sets and models, and to chart out an approach for developing interim decision support tools that can be used until more appropriately scaled climate information is available. To develop collaborative relationships with other Federal agencies and association research groups to foster focused and responsive research and to accelerate transfer of research results and tool development to real-world applications for climate adaptation. To elicit feedback on EPA’s climate R&D plan for water and wastewater infrastructure, and to develop recommended actions for the EPA National Water Program.
