Potential effects of climate change on Oregon crops

Citation:

OLSZYK, D. M. Potential effects of climate change on Oregon crops. Presented at Sherman County Watershed Council annual meeting, Moro, OR, February 10, 2009.

Impact/Purpose:

This talk will discuss: 1) potential changes in the Pacific Northwest climate with global climate change, 2) how climate change can affect crops, 3) the diversity of Oregon agriculture, 4) examples of potential response of Oregon crops – especially dryland winter wheat, and 5) brief comments on how Oregon crops may adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Description:

This talk will discuss: 1) potential changes in the Pacific Northwest climate with global climate change, 2) how climate change can affect crops, 3) the diversity of Oregon agriculture, 4) examples of potential response of Oregon crops – especially dryland winter wheat, and 5) brief comments on how Oregon crops may adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. I will include comments on how climate change (elevated CO2, temperature and possibly drought) may directly affect crop yield. I also will discuss potential impacts of climate change on crops via indirect effects on plant pests.
