Book Review: Large-Scale Ecosystem Restoration: Five Case Studies from the United States

Impact/Purpose:

The five case studies span the United States, detailing restoration efforts within the Chesapeake Bay, Everglades, San Francisco Bay-Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, Platte River Basin, and Upper Mississippi River Basin. The depth of the natural, ecological, and political history in each area is detailed well and has been compressed into this very well organized treatise. Among the multiple authors of the five case studies are some of the key leaders in the disciplines of water resources; wetland ecology; restoration ecology; environmental law and policy; wildlife management; ecological/environmental economics; sociology and conflict resolution; civil and environmental engineering; and restoration engineering/construction. The combination of the detailed knowledge of these authors along with the cross-pollinating syntheses of the editors provide the reader with the aggregate wisdom of the principals involved, resulting in a very dense and enlightening reading experience.

Description:

Broad-scale ecosystem restoration efforts involve a very complex set of ecological and societal components, and the success of any ecosystem restoration project rests on an integrated approach to implementation. Editors Mary Doyle and Cynthia Drew have successfully synthesized many of these factors in their comprehensive volume entitled, Large-Scale Ecosystem Restoration: Five Case Studies from the United States, which is part of The Society for Ecological Restoration International’s series, The Science and Practice of Ecological Restoration.
