Assessment of the Ecological Risks of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs): Derivation of WQC and Consideration of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations as a Source

Citation:

ANKLEY, G. T. Assessment of the Ecological Risks of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs): Derivation of WQC and Consideration of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations as a Source. Presented at OW/ORD Seminar Series, Duluth, MN, December 10, 2008.

Impact/Purpose:

This presentation will discuss approaches suitable for the derivation of WQC for EDCs. The presentation also will address the potential contributions to aquatic environments of EDCs from a novel point source, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and potential effects of EDCs from CAFOs on fish.

Description:

The occurrence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the environment has been associated with impacts on fish. Hence, there is a need for numerical water quality criteria (WQC) for the protection of aquatic life from adverse effects of EDCs. However, EDCs have some unique properties that require consideration of approaches to WQC derivation which differ somewhat from techniques used in the past for other types of chemicals. This presentation will discuss approaches suitable for the derivation of WQC for EDCs. The presentation also will address the potential contributions to aquatic environments of EDCs from a novel point source, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and potential effects of EDCs from CAFOs on fish.
