RESEARCH AREA -- ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CONTROL (AIR POLLUTION TECHNOLOGY BRANCH, AIR POLLUTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL DIVISION, NRMRL)

Citation:

Description:

The Air Pollution Technology Branch (APTB) of NRMRL's Air Pollution Prevention and Control Division in Research Triangle Park, NC, has conducted several research projects for evaluating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the control of pollution control systems and combustion processes. Since many air pollution control methods for combustion sources rely on modification of the combustion process, improved control of that process can make improvements toward achieving minimum emissions of CO2, NOx, CO, and products of incomplete combustion. Two methods evaluated in APTB research projects are the use of fuzzy-logic-based process control and neural networks for pattern identification. These two methods appear to have promise for improving control system performance. For more information on this research, visit the website at http://www.epa.gov/appcdwww/crb/aptb/ai.htm.
