The Mid-Continent Ecology Division addresses areas of investigation consistent with the Office of Research and Developments ORDs) Strategic Plan and the mission of the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL). These areas of investigation include: (1) understanding and predicting basic biological and chemical mechanisms of toxicity; (2) measuring and predicting the uptake, distribution and elimination of xenobiotics in aquatic life and wildlife; (3) predicting reproductive and developmental effects of chemical stressors; (4) predicting the effects of mixtures and/or multiple stressors in water and sediment; (5) characterizing and predicting the responses of aquatic ecosystems to physical, chemical and biological stressors; (6) understanding the characteristics of the surrounding watersheds that influence the sustainability of aquatic systems; and (7)developing ways to measure the integrity and sustainability of freshwater ecosystems and diagnosing causes of degradation.
