Description:
My talk will be about the my research to characterize the role that burrowing shrimp play as foundation/engineering species in Pacific NW estuaries. My research has focused on measuring the abundance & distribution of two species (ghost shrimp & mud shrimp) at ecosystem scales, and on quantifying the impacts these shrimp have on 1) community structure, 2) nutrient & carbon cycling, and 3) food web dynamics. I will also discuss how field studies and modeling have been used to explore the ecosystem consequences of declining densities of shrimp populations, as has been observed in some estuaries.
