DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATIONS OF REGION 4 WASTEWATER TREATMENT FACILITIES: AUGUST 2007 – SEPTEMBER 2008

Impact/Purpose:

Diagnostic Evaluations are conducted to identify the causes of facility non-compliance and recommend corrective actions to help problem facilities achieve compliance.

Description:

Diagnostic Evaluations (DEs) are conducted by the Region 4 Science and Ecosystem Support Division (SESD) at the request of the Region 4 Water Management Division or Region 4 States and focus on two key areas: 1) facility design criteria are compared to accepted design parameters to determine if facility non-compliance is due to design constraints, and 2) facility operations are assessed to determine if operational problems are adversely affecting plant performance. Frequently, both design and operational problems adversely affect plant performance. Projects involve extensive sampling and analysis of influent, effluent, and in-plant waste streams as well as detailed process-control testing of biological and physical treatment unit processes. All sampling and analyses are conducted using EPA approved protocols. For this reporting period, SESD conducted one Diagnostic Evaluation in Cherokee, NC.
