WANG, A., M. R. GWINN, J. A. Shatkin, W. J. CYBULSKI, AND JMICHAEL DAVIS. Supporting nanomaterial risk assessment by case studies of nano-titanium dioxide using comprehensive environmental assessment. Presented at Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting, Baltimore, MD, March 15 - 20, 2009.

Impact/Purpose:

While products containing engineered nanomaterials (NM) are already in use, quantitative assessment of NM risks is not yet feasible due to critical data gaps. Case studies of NM are being developed by EPA to identify gaps in information needed for risk assessment.

Description:

Here we describe a comprehensive environmental assessment (CEA) approach for two case studies of nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) in real world applications: water treatment and sunscreen. CEA combines a product life cycle framework with the risk assessment paradigm.
