EMERGING CONTAMINANTS IN BIOSOLIDS

Citation:

ACHESON, C. M., R. BASTIAN, AND M. MILLS. EMERGING CONTAMINANTS IN BIOSOLIDS. Presented at 10th Annual National Biosolids Conference/Workshop, Potomac, MD, June 16, 2008.

Impact/Purpose:

To provide background about emerging contaminants such as EDCs, to discuss available data for some characteristic compounds, and explain the current research.

Description:

Emerging contaminants are receiving increasing media and scientific attention. These chemicals are sometimes referred to as compounds of emerging concern or trace organic compounds, and include several groups of chemicals including endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), and pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Concerns about these chemicals stem from the possibility of serious human and wildlife effects and environmental persistence. This presentation will provide background about emerging contaminants such as EDCs, discuss available data for some characteristic compounds, and explain current research. Discussions of current research will focus on treatment performance for these compounds in wastewater treatment settings, especially those relating to biosolids.
