Description:

The Water Supply and Water Resources Division (WSWRD) conducts research to help prepare the primary and secondary regulations for drinking water and to develop technologies and strategies for controlling waterborne contaminants. The program integrates chemistry, engineering, microbiology, computer modeling and cost analysis to provide effective, reliable and cost-effective techniques. WSWRD programs include research on: urban and non-urban storm water runoff; combined and sanitary sewer overflows; underground and aboveground storage tanks, and oil spills; contaminated sediments; acquisition, treatment, distribution and support services for safe drinking water; microbiological contaminant sampling, characterization and management; watershed hydrology modeling; and constructed wetlands. WSWRD operates in-house pilot facilities and conducts field scale research. The Division works closely with municipal and county organizations that treat raw water and operate water supply facilities and wet weather flow control systems, including EPA's Regional and Program Offices, state regulatory authorities, other federal agencies, private industry, and the public. WSWRD has four branches: Urban Watershed Management Branch, Treatment Technology Evaluation Branch, Microbial Contaminants Control Branch, Water Quality Management Branch.
