Description:
Fisher information is a measure of order inherent in the timer series data for any dynamic system. We have computed the Fisher Information for nation-states using the data from 1960 to 1997 from the State Instability Task Force. We find that nation-states fall into two categories one with a low Fisher information and many political upheavals, and another with high Fisher information and very few political upheavals. Further, we find that as nation-states evolve from an underdeveloped to a fully developed state, they traverse a phase of low Fisher information and great instability.
