Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources and Water Supply Security through Adaptation

Impact/Purpose:

to present information

Description:

This presentation is to describe the water resources adaptation program (WRAP) at the U.S.EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory, and to highlight initial research results on hydroclimatic periodicity and changes and on adaptation measures including sustainable water infrastructure, watershed management, water reuse, and water resources in alternative energy productions. In the presentation, I will first review the glaciation and hydroclimatic periodicity existing in the Earth’s history and describe how this regulation can be used in forecasting of future hydrologic conditions based on which specific adaptation measures could be designed. Secondly, I will briefly introduce the WRAP adaptation research with the focus on watershed and water infrastructure adaptation. These adaptation measures are considered pertinent to increase the resilience of our water infrastructure and water resources management in the future, albeit largely uncertain, hydrologic conditions. This presentation is intended to initiate scientific dialogues and potential cooperative activities between EPA and IWHR scientists on climate change, water resources adaptation, and other subjects of mutual interests.
