Description:

The Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Drinking Water Systems (DWS) Center has verified the performance of treatment technologies that may be used by communities in meeting the newly promulgated (2006) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2 Rule). The LT2 Rule requires utilities to do more monitoring and may require additional treatment to reduce the exposure of the public to certain waterborne pathogens. The ETV DWS Center has recently updated the protocol for membrane technologies to reflect the new LT2 rule. The LT2 Rule addresses the use of membranes that may be used to achieve credits for the reduction of Cryptosporidium. The LT2 Rule requires product-specific testing of membranes, considered an alternative filtration technology. The ETV Program’s protocols and reports can be useful in assessing membrane technologies. The revised ETV testing protocol for membrane technologies will be described, along with results of testing according to the new protocol cited in the LT2 Rule. The LT2 Rule also addresses the use of ultraviolet radiation (UV) as a treatment technology that may be used to achieve credits for the reduction of Cryptosporidium. The ETV Program’s protocols and reports can be useful in assessing UV reactors. There are three UV ETV reports that describe the results of microbiological challenges conducted prior to the promulgation of the new LT2 Rule. The ETV reports also provide considerable operation and maintenance information on lamp cleaning systems and sensors. The ETV DWS Center existing ETV protocol for UV is being replaced with the EPA’s UV Guidance Manual reactor validation protocol.
