Description:

This manuscript briefly reviews the impact of the NAS report “Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century: A Vision and A Strategy” and it’s potential impact on the field of toxicology. ). This report provides a strategic and tactical framework for attaining the goals of determining hazard, increasing testing efficiency, decreasing animal use, and increasing knowledge of the biological bases of diseases. The report bring together emerging areas of scientific thought and technology, including systems biology, genomics, bioinformatics and computational biology. Importantly, the report also make it quite clear that this is not a short-term research approach, but instead an effort that will require decades of increased resources and scientific challenges. In the long term, this effort will cause the paradigm shift needed in toxicology to meet present and future needs to protect human health.
