Physical characterization of intertidal estuarine plant habitats over time may reveal distribution-limiting thresholds. Temperature data from loggers embedded in sediment in transects crossing Zostera marina and Z. japonica habitats in lower Yaquina Bay, Oregon display significant differences in daily moving averages and diel temperature extremes. Insolation, flooding by riverine flow or tidal salt wedge, atmospheric heating and/or cooling, intermittent cloud cover, and insulation by covering biomass all can influence the suitability of these habitats, potentially limiting distribution of potentially competing species.
