Microwave assisted total synthesis of a benzothiophene-based new chemical entity (NCE)

Citation:

VARMA, R. S. AND V. Polshettiwar. Microwave assisted total synthesis of a benzothiophene-based new chemical entity (NCE). Presented at 235th American Chemical Society National Meeting, New Orleans, LA, April 06 - 10, 2008.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

Pharmaceutical scientists are required to generate diverse arrays of complex targets in short span of time, which can now be achieved by microwave-assisted organic synthesis. New chemical entities (NCE) can be built in a fraction of the time using this technique. However, there are very few studies which report the multi-step total synthesis of NCE under microwave irradiation condition. A microwave-assisted total synthesis of benzothiophene-based molecules has been developed (Scheme 1) wherein multistep synthesis was completed within 12 hrs, which may require one week under conventional heating conditions. Also, the minimization of solvent usage renders this expeditious and high yielding method eco-friendly thus demonstrating the prowess of microwave heating in drug discovery and development processes.
