A Paradigm Shift to Protect Environment
Citation:
Hansen, V. A Paradigm Shift to Protect Environment. Presented at Community Connections 42: Environmental Health Education and Advocacy, Visitors from the Republic of Georgia, Cincinnati, OH, October 26, 2007.
Impact/Purpose:
To discuss how to protect the environment by moving toward solutions that will require a shift in the way one thinks about risks, environmental management and the objective of sustainable.
Description:
Attempts to protect the environment have primarily been remedial with the intent to move away from environmental problems. Congressional agendas have provided specific acts related to pollution of air, water, and toxic wastes. These acts provide the regulatory powers to move away from the problems, but not toward solutions. If the environment is to be protected, it must be accomplished before it is compromised, keeps natural systems intact, adequately meets human needs and expectations, and enables economic expansion. Movement toward solutions will require a shift in the way we think about risks, environmental management, and the objective of sustainable.
