ARSENIC URINARY METABOLITES: BIOMARKER STUDY

Impact/Purpose:

The objectives of this project are to 1) develop baseline information on urinary arsenic metabolic profiles below 300 g/l arsenic in drinking water; 2) determine variability of metabolites as a function of sex, age and volume of water ingested; 3) develop baseline information on the role of diet as a source of inorganic arsenic as a function of correlation with urinary metabolites and 4) determine the intraindividual variability.

Description:

A population of adults and children with ranges of 10 to 300 g/l of arsenic in their drinking water will have their urine analyzed for total and speciated arsenic. A sample of 30 families will be selected based on tap water analyses for arsenic. This sample will comprise 50% adults and 50% children (below 16 years of age) and within each group 50% female versus male. The diet will be evaluated extensively (inorganic, MMA, DMA and organic arsenic) in a sub-sample of individuals through the duplicate plate sampling and analysis for arsenic. Individuals will be asked to give first morning voids for five days consecutively. On one of those five days families will be asked to collect each urine sample separately or 24 hours. Buccal cells will be collected every other day for a total of three days.
